Wifi Mesh: Optimising Your Home or Business Internet Experience

In today’s digital age, having a strong ‘whole home’ or ‘whole business’ wifi connection that is reliable is essential. However, poor wifi performance can be a common issue for both home and business users. Fortunately, there is a solution: wifi mesh technology. With a wifi mesh network, you can extend the range and coverage of your existing wifi network, ensuring that you have a fast and stable connection throughout your home or office. In this blog post, we’ll explore what wifi mesh is, how it works, and why it’s an excellent option for homeowners and businesses looking to optimise their internet experience.

Wifi mesh networks use multiple access points (APs) to create a seamless network that covers a large area. Each AP communicates with the others to ensure that the device is always connected to the strongest signal, and data is transferred seamlessly from one AP to another as you move around your home or office. This means that you won’t experience dropped connections or slow speeds as you move from room to room, and you can enjoy smooth streaming, gaming, and browsing without interruption. With a wifi mesh network, you’ll enjoy a consistent connection, no matter where you are in your home or office, making it an excellent investment for anyone who relies on a high-speed internet connection to work or stay connected with loved ones.

What is a mesh network

A mesh network is a type of wireless network that uses multiple access points (APs) to create a seamless network that covers a large area. Unlike traditional wifi networks that rely on a single router to transmit signals, a mesh network is designed to provide wider coverage and better signal strength by using multiple APs that communicate with each other. This creates a web-like network where data is transferred seamlessly from one AP to another as you move around your home or office, providing a consistent and stable connection no matter where you are. The beauty of a mesh network is that it can be easily expanded by adding more access points, making it a scalable solution that can grow with your needs. Whether you have a large home or a business that requires reliable wifi coverage, a mesh network can provide the solution you need to stay connected and productive.

Wireless or Ethernet

There are two main types of mesh networks: wireless and ethernet. Wireless mesh networks use a wireless connection between access points to transmit data, while ethernet mesh networks use wired connections. While both types can provide reliable wifi coverage, there are some advantages to having an ethernet backhaul.

Firstly, ethernet backhaul usually provides a faster and more stable connection than wireless. This is because wired connections are less prone to interference and can handle more data at once, leading to a smoother and more consistent internet experience.

Additionally, ethernet mesh networks can be more secure than wireless ones. With a wired connection, there is less risk of outside interference or hacking attempts, as the data is transmitted through a physical cable rather than through the air.

Finally, ethernet mesh networks can be more scalable than wireless ones. While wireless mesh networks can also be expanded by adding more access points, ethernet backhaul allows for a greater number of access points to be added without sacrificing speed or reliability.

At Infinite Loop, we offer both wireless and ethernet mesh network solutions, and can help you determine which type is best for your home or business. Our team of experts will provide a thorough assessment of your needs and recommend the best solution for you, ensuring that you get the most out of your wifi mesh network.

How much does a wifi mesh system cost?

If you’re tired of dealing with poor wifi performance and are looking for a solution, a wifi mesh system might be just what you need. Mesh technology offers an easy and reliable way to extend the range and coverage of your home’s existing wifi network, ensuring that you have a strong and stable connection no matter where you are in your home.

But how much does a wifi mesh system cost? Well, the answer will depend on a few different factors, including the size of your home and the specific features you’re looking for. In general, a basic wifi mesh system can cost anywhere from £50 to £500, while more advanced systems can cost upwards of £1000.

When considering the cost of a wifi mesh system, it’s important to remember that this is an investment in the performance and reliability of your internet connection. With a mesh system, you’ll no longer have to deal with dead zones, dropped connections, or slow speeds. Instead, you’ll enjoy seamless connectivity throughout your home, allowing you to stream, work, and play without interruption.

Of course, the cost of a wifi mesh system is just one factor to consider when choosing the right solution for your home. You’ll also want to look at factors like ease of installation, compatibility with your existing hardware, and the overall reliability and performance of the system.

What are the benefits of using a wifi mesh system?

In today’s fast-paced world, staying connected has become more important than ever before. With so many devices in our homes and the need for uninterrupted internet access, a reliable and efficient wifi network has become a necessity. This is where wifi mesh technology comes into play. A wifi mesh system offers numerous benefits, making it a sought-after solution for homeowners looking to solve poor wifi performance.

One of the most significant benefits of using a wifi mesh system is its ability to extend the range and coverage of your home’s existing wifi network. Unlike traditional wifi routers, which struggle to maintain a steady connection throughout the entire house, wifi mesh systems use multiple devices (nodes) placed strategically throughout the home to create a seamless network. This means that no matter where you are in the house, you can enjoy an uninterrupted internet experience.

Another significant advantage of using a wifi mesh system is its ability to eliminate dead zones. Dead zones are areas in your home where the wifi signal is weak or non-existent. These areas can be frustrating, especially when you’re trying to stream a movie or video call with a friend or family member. By using multiple nodes, a wifi mesh system ensures that there are no dead zones in the house, providing a seamless and uninterrupted online experience.

Wifi mesh systems also offer better performance than traditional wifi routers. They use advanced technology, such as beamforming and band steering, to ensure that your devices are connected to the best possible network at all times. This means that you’ll experience faster internet speeds and

How many nodes do I need for a wifi mesh network?

If you are experiencing poor wifi performance in your home, a wifi mesh network can be a great solution to extend the range and coverage of your existing wifi network. One of the most common questions people have when considering a mesh network is how many nodes they will need.

The answer, unfortunately, is that it depends on the size of your home, the number of devices you have, and the layout of your space. As a general rule of thumb, you should aim to have one node for every 1,500-2,000 square feet of space. However, if you have a particularly large home, or if there are many walls, floors, or other obstacles in the way of your wifi signal, you may need more nodes to ensure that you have consistent coverage throughout your space.

Another factor to consider is the number of devices you have connected to your network. If you have a lot of devices, such as smartphones, tablets, laptops, and smart home devices, you may need more nodes to ensure that each device has a strong and stable connection to the internet.

Ultimately, the best way to determine how many nodes you need for your wifi mesh network is to work with a professional installer who can assess your space and recommend the optimal number of nodes for your needs. With a properly installed mesh network, you can enjoy fast and reliable wifi coverage throughout your home, no matter how many devices you have or how large your space may be.

What are some good wifi mesh products on the market?

As technology continues to evolve, so does the way we connect to the internet. No longer are we limited to the traditional router and single access point. With the introduction of mesh technology, we now have the ability to extend the range and coverage of our wifi network with ease. In this blog post, we will explore some of the best wifi mesh products currently available on the market.

1. Tenda

Tenda might not be a brand you are aware of but we have installed a number of their products and they are cheap and easy to setup. The cheapest option is the MW3 and this is good for small 2-3 bedroom houses with internet speeds of less than 100 Mbps. If 3 nodes doesn’t quite cut it, you can add extra nodes as you require them. If you have a bigger house, or faster internet speeds, take a look at the MX12. The Mx 12 supports all the latest WiFi standards and has a coverage of 7000 sq ft. 3 nodes should be enough for a 4 bedroom house.

2. TP-Link

TP-Link are well known in the networking space, they’ve been making routers for years. The M5 range provide coverage over 5000 sq ft, enough for  a 2 or 3 bedroom house. The 5 GHz network provides speeds of 867 Mbps so fast enough for most networks. The Deco range also provide parental controls which can be useful. While the M5 is good, we would recommend the M9 as it has a dedicated backhaul channel which means faster speeds, perfect for busy households. Both the M5 and M9 can have additional nodes added as and when needed.

There are many many more options, and they can seem confusing. What is the difference between a budget solution cost £50 and a professionally installed solution from the likes of Unifi. We will be happy to provide a free consultation.
