So, this is a question we get asked a lot, along with, how much does it cost to repair a liquid-damaged MacBook? The MacBook is a great piece of technology for its specifications, usability and huge range of applications. So when you find your MacBook to have liquid damage, it’s hard not to panic! Thankfully, at Infinite Loop, we are experts at liquid damage repair so lets run through some of the do’s and don’ts.
1. Should I put it in rice?
No, no, no, no, and again no! This is one of those old wives tales that seems to have taken hold. With liquid damage, you are trying to remove the damage, not dry it out. No amount of drying is going to repair a damaged component. Liquid, even when dry can leave a residue. Sugar is the enemy here, if you spill a sugary drink, even when dry, sugar is going to be eating away at your precious MacBook motherboard.
2. Should I turn it upside down somewhere warm?
Again, no. We are not trying to dry it out here.
3. Should I use a hairdryer?
For the love of God – no! At best it will achieve nothing. Remember, we are not trying to dry it out. At worst you will melt the keys!
4. So, what should I do?
You should remove the back and inspect it for liquid damage before cleaning it with isopropyl. Here at The Infinite Loop, we have a variety of specialised tools that can help us accomplish this more completely, such ultrasonic baths. It is not for the weak of heart, and we strongly advise against doing it since there’s a chance you may make matters worse. But iFixit has instructions if you do decide to disassemble your MacBook.
5. How much does it cost to repair a liquid-damaged MacBook?
In general, the cost of repairing a liquid-damaged MacBook can vary depending on the extent of the damage, and the specific model of the MacBook. It is best to contact an expert like ourselves for an accurate estimate.
6. Can you fix it for me?
Yes. We specialise in liquid damage and we have seen it all from vomit to cat pee. The sooner you can get it to us the better. This is because liquid damage is progressive – it eats away at the board and the electronics.
